To paraphrase the title of John Cale’s autobiography, what’s Canadian for Zen?
A DJ of over seventeen years, Kuma has brought sounds across the dub-based spectrum to ear and asses from Sapporo to San Francisco. Recognized by the likes of BBC Radio 1′s The Breezeblock and their infamous Dubstep Warz show for his excursions into the dubstep realm and able to turn heads both on the dance floor and in the sound-art field, his is not your average sound. Owner/founder of the Konspiracy Group, a music group, booking agency and p.r. hub for future music of all kinds, hes a leader in the North American bass music field, helping deliver dubstep and jungle basslines to waistlines across North America and around the world. A former host and producer with CBC Radio and current host of Art Of Beatz, Vancouver’s home for electronic music on the radio, he’s got one hand on the pulse and the other on on a Red Stripe.
From early days throwing parties on B.C’s Vancouver Island as a teenager to legendary ambient shows as part of Vancouver’s Team Lounge collective and brining Kode 9 to Vancouver for the city’s first ever dubstep show, Kuma has a remained a steadfast figure on the cutting edge of Cascadian bassbins.
A return to Vancouver in 1999 saw Kuma join forces with Vancouver’s Team Lounge collective, pioneers of the Cascadian ambient scene and an organization that helped to bring the likes of Pete Lawrence of the UK’s Big Chill to Canada for the first time.
In 2001, Kuma founded The Konspiracy Group, a brand which has served home to artists from around the world as a label, booking agency, promoters and a continued bastion in the fight against conservative music. Making his name working with SF junglists like Sage and UFO! early on, Kuma and The Konspiracy Group were the first booking agency to take on dubstep during its initial breakthroughs in North America, helping pioneering DJ, Joe Nice lead the charge. As a promoter, Kuma was the first person to bring dubstep to Vancouver hosting Kode 9 as part of the Forward Sound series, which later saw shows from the likes of T-Power, DJ Rupture, Move D and Spacetime Continuum.
In 2008, Kuma signed his first tune (Vancouver’s first dubstep signing) to Bristol’s Immerse Records, a dive bombing stepper called “Dawn Stepped Outside”which intrigued legendary producers Horsepower Productions enough to come out of a five year studio hiatus for a remix of DSO played by the likes of Mary-Anne Hobbs and Martin “Blackdown” Clark.
In the words of Resident Advisor’s Andrew Ryce “Kuma’s music is tinged with mystical anxiety and Orientalist tropes, like Shackleton holed up in some remote corner of the Middle East instead of overcast London. Kuma’s music shares the same snaky, wandering basslines (though his are more indebted to the lush pockets of sub-bass of garage then Shackleton’s extensive feelers), and he’s got an unparalleled sense for percussion, contorting 2step’s bounce and swing into a woozy, punch-drunk sway.“
Since then Kuma has released sub bass laden missives on his own TKG music label and has remixed the likes of Grievous Angel, Clubroot, Fax, Tomas Jirku, Sub Swara and Bill Laswell super group, The Blood Of Heroes.
